Where have you been working?

I am currently working on O&O Hayman Island, located within the Whitsundays. (Queensland Australia)

What is your role?

Dive Instructor / Dive Guide

What does a typical day look like?

Typical day starts at 8 and goes till 4:30. My team and I depart around 9am and spend the day on the Great Barrier Reef snorkelling and diving. After work I walk home and have a coconut or two while watching the sun go down.

How hard was it to find a job after you graduated?

It was very easy for me to get into my current role. Previous experience and being there when the position opened made me an ideal candidate. It helped that my training was recognised internationally.

How well prepared were you for your current role with the training you had?

My training  enabled me to be well prepared for the role and gave me greater insight for the role. Having studied at Dive Otago my training was better and my skills sharper than other candidates when they started.

What is special about your location?

Where I live and work is located within the Great Barrier Reef.

What are some of your favourite memories so far?

Leading dive and snorkel tours that have involved swimming with whales, reef sharks, turtles and fish as large as I am.

What would you say to a potential student thinking about becoming a dive instructor?

I'm living in a tropical paradise but the skills that I learn't from my time at Dive Otago gave me a solid foundation to be able to work around the world. It's a certification and level of knowledge that is transferable into many different areas and types of work. Some 'Hot Tips', dont skimp on gear. Especially if you are wanting to work with it after. Likewise look after it and it will look after you. A boat ticket or second or third language will open a lot of desirable work opportunities. Think about what you want to achieve and where you'd like to go in your instructing career.
