Your adventure into the professional levels of recreational scuba diving begins with the PADI Divemaster programme. During this programme you will work closely with a PADI Instructor as you expand your dive knowledge and hone your skills to the professional level. PADI Divemaster training develops your leadership abilities, qualifying you to supervise dive activities and assist instructors with student divers. PADI Divemaster is the prerequisite certification for both the PADI Assistant Instructor and PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor certifications.

The National Certificate in Diving Leadership programme will fine tune your diving skills whilst introducing you to the theory behind diving. Learn about dive physics, physiology and equipment. Gain experience supervising students under the guidance of a PADI Instructor and run daily diving activities in both confined water and the ocean.

After becoming certified as a PADI Divemaster you will be authorised to:

    • Supervise both training and non-training related activities by planning, organising and directing dives
    • Assist a PADI Instructor during the training sessions for any PADI Diver course
    • Conduct the PADI Skin Diver course and PADI Discover Snorkelling programme
    • Conduct the PADI Discover Local Diving experience
    • Conduct the PADI Scuba Review programme

    Divemaster
A Divemaster’s primary function in a dive centre is to assist an instructor in dive training, guide certified divers and assist with general dive centre logistics. Divemasters need to be upbeat, positive, approachable and most of all, ensure everyone is safe and having fun.

    Why PADI?

PADI is the world’s largest and most respected scuba diving training organisation. PADI divers carry the most sought after scuba credentials in the world. No matter where you choose to dive, your PADI scuba certification card will be recognised and accepted. With more than 6,000 PADI dive shops and resorts operating in more than 180 countries and territories, you will have access to more job opportunities as a PADI professional.

    Placement Assistance

As a PADI professional, you gain access to career placement through the PADI Pros Site’s job board, which lists career openings all over the world.  In addition, Dive Otago offers career placement assistance and mentoring for all of its graduates.

     Dive Instructor Training

This programme is the prerequisite qualification for the National Certificate in Diving - Instruction where you will gain your PADI Instructor qualifications. This programme is also delivered either part-time or full-time.

Dive instructors need to be technically skilled divers and creative communicators. They need to instill confidence in their students and at the same time inspire a love of the sea. This job is all about passing on knowledge and enthusiasm to ensure student satisfaction and enjoyment. Dive guiding is a job that a dive instructor will typically also fulfil in a dive centre along with sales, tank filling and equipment maintenance. With scuba training, tourism and the super yacht industries steadily growing, the demand for instructors will only increase.

    Commercial Dive Training

Commercial divers are needed all over the world. With the ever increasing demands of the gas and oil industry, as well as local infrastructure projects, commercial divers command good wages in an extremely challenging and diverse working environment. A commercial diver needs to understand things such as surface supplied diving, physics, decompression, underwater tools, anatomy and dive medicine. Further training beyond recreational certifications is required to become a commecial diver. However, as some of our past students have said, the National Certificate in Diving - Leadership will give you invaluable skills and a good dive theory knowledge base before you commence commercial training.

  • Testimonials

Chris Brooks | Commercial Diver | Graduated 2011

How did your Dive Otago training prepare you for your dive career?

"The Dive Master training at Dive Otago has helped me a great deal with my commercial diving career. It has provided me with confidence in many different situations, especially working in tight places underwater and in zero visibility. It taught me to trust my gear and provided me with the skills to look after it properly so in turn it looks after you.

The team building side of my Divemaster training has been invaluable in the commercial diving industry. A huge amount of trust is necessary in this industry and completing a dive job requires every team member to work together. You need to trust your whole team from your colleagues on the surface who look after your breathing gas and the power for the underwater tools, to the person driving the crane that gets you in and out of the water and even the person that gets you a warm drink after a long dive.

The communication skills that I learnt during my time at Dive Otago have also been invaluable. Even in good underwater conditions, it can be really hard to provide updates to the team on the surface. I learnt from my Divemaster training to stay calm and talk to slowly and clearly because miscommunication with the surface could result in an injury to myself or my work mates."

    Chris Garroway - Dive Instructor

"I've dived with Manta Rays nearly every day for the past 2 and a half years. In over 1200 dives I've seen Tiger Sharks, Hammerheads, hundreds of turtles and many other amazing marine creatures. Last year I dived the President Coolidge in Vanuatu, getting down to 60m in the process. All this was made possible by the dedicated crew at Dive Otago who opened the door to our underwater world, and a life less ordinary. Thank you so much."
